Two puppies that were found dumped in a shoebox in Bayham Road, Hailsham on August 25th have died and the incident has sparked an investigation by the RSPCA.

The puppies were close to death when they were dumped and one was dead when they were discovered. The other puppy died soon afterwards.

The amount of dogs that have been taken to shelters and rescue centres has reached an all-time high. It is thought that this is down to the credit crunch, where new owners don't anticipate the cost of keeping a pet.

Incidents where people have to move house and are not allowed to take pets to their new accommodation is also a contributing factor. The Dogs Trust recently published research that reveals that 345 stray dogs are being picked up by local authorities every day.

RSPCA animal welfare officer Marie Stevens said: "It's an offence to dump animals like this and anyone convicted of the offence could face a fine or a prison sentence."

Anyone with any information on who the owners of the puppies are asked to contact the RSPCA in confidence on 0300 1234 999.
