Good news for Hailsham's livestock market as campaigners claim that it has been saved from all forms of development.
South East Markets are in charge of running the market and has now bought the freehold site which means it will stay at its present site unless a better option becomes available.
The market dates back to 1252 and has been at its present site in the town centre in 1867.
In recent years there has been a threat of development from supermarkets but this should now recede after the recent developments.
Campaigners celebrated the news and paid tribute to David White a Wealden District councillor and chairman of Hellingly Parish Council who worked hard to help Hailsham Market Action Group during the campaign.
Phil Hook, chairman of Hailsham Market Action Group, said: "This is the best news that 2012 could bring the livestock farming community in and around East Sussex."
Roger Waters, director of South East Marts, said: "It's great news that Hailsham Market is now on a firm footing, with the company that is operating the market also owning the market site.
