One of Hailsham's most experienced police officers is retiring after 45 years of public service with Sussex Police.

Alan Davey is retiring at the age of 69 to spend more time with his family. Mr Davey worked as an officer in the town before moving on to work as a case director working with the Crown Prosecution Service.

Mr Davey joined Sussex Police in March 1966 and began working in Hailsham as a police officer before moving onto become a detective in 1970. He began working for CID in Eastbourne in the 1970's and stayed there for 13 years.

During his time working for CID, Mr Davey played a major role in solving some high-profile cases including arresting an arsonist who was sent to the notorious Broadmoor Hospital indefinitely.

Mr Davey was given a Coroner's Commendation for an investigation into the death of a young woman at Beachy Head in 1977.

In 1988, Mr Davey took charge of Hailsham's CID office for five years. He eventually retired from active policing in 1997 and began preparing cases for both magistrates and crown courts as a support worker until his retirement.
