Senior citizens in Hailsham have been reminded that they are

eligible to claim a refund in the form of a subsidy against the cost of their

senior railcard.

Anyone living within the parish and who is of retirement age

can claim a subsidy direct from Hailsham Town Council on their senior railcard.

The railcard can be used to get tickets from most train operators in the United

Kingdom with one third off of the cost of normal train fares at off-peak times.

Over 2,000 senior railcards have been part-refunded since

Hailsham Town Council started the scheme in 2002. The council is the only one

operating such a scheme in the south-east.

Councillor Nigel Coltman, chairman of the town council's

finance and budget oversight committee said, "The council is proud to support

senior citizens who face difficult times at the moment due to low interest

rates on their savings by continuing to offer our senior railcard subsidy

scheme.

"The aim of the subsidy scheme is to encourage eligible

senior railcard holders to enjoy the freedom of travel that this mode of

transport offers and enhance public transport choice overall."

The subsidy payments can be claimed up to the value of £15 a

year or the actual cost if lower than that figure. All you have to do is take

your railcard to the council offices at the Inglenook, Market Street, Hailsham,

along with proof of your ID and current address and you will get a part-refund.

Terms and conditions apply for subsidies on two or

three-year railcards.
