Hailsham is preparing itself for A Dickensian Christmas market on the High Street on Saturday 10th December and what should be an atmospheric afternoon designed to get the town into the festive spirit.

The town centre will receive a makeover and from 3pm will resemble an old-fashioned Christmas market as the high street becomes full of seasonal stalls giving Hailsham shoppers the chance to buy some wonderful quality locally produced Christmas fare.

It will provide the perfect opportunity to get some Christmas shopping done with a wide range of shops presenting original gift ideas, decorations and cards for sale.

To keep the crowds fed and watered in a seasonal manner there will be a hog-roast stall, roasted chestnuts and mulled wine for sale.

Children will be entertained by Santa's grotto, with prizes on offer for the best Dickensian Fancy dressed adult and child and for winners of the Find-A-Reindeer game. Adding even more to the festive theme will be the White House Primary School and Hailsham Choral Society performing carol singing. There will also be entertainment from St Mary's Church Bell Ringers and the Wealden Brass Band.

The high Street will be closed to all traffic from 5am until late as the town centre is transformed into a scene from A Christmas Carol and as all the stall holders set up and get ready for what promises to be an event not to be missed.

Town mayor Councillor Jeff Bentley-Astor said, "Our Christmas Market programme includes a wide range of activities which we hope will enthuse residents and visitors alike and help support local businesses during the festive period."

Copies of the Dickensian Yuletide Market programme, which includes a schedule of entertainment on the day, are available free of charge from the Town Council offices in Market Street. Or, for further information on this and other Christmas events organised by Hailsham Town Council, either call 01323 841702 (during office hours) or log on to www.hailsham-tc.gov.uk.
