A new initiative to reduce the number of books and electrical goods ending up in landfill is to be launched in Hailsham on Monday.

Healthy Planet and Age UK, will be taking in the items under the 'Books for Free' scheme at  their premises on St Mary's Walk.

Shoppers can then come to the shop and choose up to three books free-of-charge each day. There will also be a small charity shop recycling a range of electrical items, clothes and toys.

Most charity shops already take such goods but then go on to sell them, this imitative would not only offer freebies but will hopefully increase footfall in the stores.

Sue Goodwin, for Age UK East Sussex, said: "Would you like to help? We are looking for volunteers to join our new team and help with distributing free books, recycling and serving in the shop.

"We can offer you a great team to work with and a lot of fun, plus you'll be working with us all to help the environment too."

Volunteers are needed. Tel: 01273 476704.
