A new Hailsham bike scheme needs volunteers and donations
mental health difficulties wants to expand its activities to set up a bicycle
maintenance workshop for members this summer.
The Hailsham hub of Sussex Oakleaf gives support to adults
living with mental health problems. The bike maintenance initiative is designed
to foster new skills and help individuals build confidence. The end result
would see members take home their own renovated bicycle.
However, Sussex Oakleaf needs help from volunteers to help
set up the workshop. Donations of bikes are required along with a venue that
doesn't charge much in rent. Funding streams would also be very useful and help
the scheme to continue in the future.
Maggie Harvey, project co-ordinator told the Sussex Express:
"While we could hold the course at our well-being hub, we would love to find a
larger space where we can spread out and leave the bikes during the week, a
large garage, empty warehouse or shop front.
"We are also looking for volunteers to help out, sharing
their skills, and hopefully their tools.
"Any spare tools that people are prepared to loan or donate
to the project, particularly 10 and 15mm spanners, Allen keys etc."
