Apparently from 209 incidents caught on CCTV there has been only two arrests. Hailsham Town Council spent £8,000 earlier this year and the total cost has been £20,000.

It is a bit difficult to justify in the current cash crisis. Though perhaps there would have been more incidents if the cameras had not been there.

Conservative Hailsham town councillor, Bill Bentley questioned the ratio but the police response is that many incidents are included in the figure that don't involve potential arrests or even a police visit.

Are we a masochistic nation? We submit to all this surveillance without a murmur. We are the most watched people on earth. Why do we put up with it? Because it makes us 'feel safer'? Well we obviously aren't.

Could it be that everyone has too much to do and can't find the time to watch the screens – even when they're being paid to do so?
