Dining delights for Valentine's Day

Hailsham is not immediately associated with having some hotspots for romance but there are some gems around town to fan the Valentine’s Day amour.

The cosy Lamb Inn, offers ‘posh pub grub’  (think Baked free range egg with Chilley Farm bacon, wild mushrooms, cream and smoked cheddar as a starter or small plate), with vegetarian options. The three-course Valentine’s menu (£22.50 per person) appears to be light on the garlic and heavy on the food of love (think creamy sauces and puddings that would be perfect to share). And after your meal you can enjoy the warmth of one of the three open fires.

Slightly further afield (heading towards Eastbourne) is the acclaimed Hungry Monk (acclaimed by my family and The Times and AA Restaurant Guide - and self-proclaimed birthplace of the Banoffi Pie). There is a lovely fireside spot to enjoy pre-dinner drinks before heading into the main dining area, or for those willing to pay a little more one of the private dining rooms – The Tartan Room is most suitable for a couple.

Nestled in the heart of the Sussex Downs is the lovely Silletts Cottage Restaurant – another cosy option. Parts of the farmhouse date back to 1540 but the food is much more contemporary, with locally sourced Pork and Steak and some English wines.

For the full sheebang, have a Valentine's weekend away (but not too far away). The Old Forge Hotel is offering a break of £150 per person, per night from Friday February 11 to Sunday the 13th. On arrival be treated to complimentary chocolates and a half bottle of champagne, English breakfast and dinner in the candlelit restaurant. Sign, it sounds fantastic.
